The Punjab unit president of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Suraksha Samiti, Manish Sood, alias Bunty, was shot dead by his security guard at his house in Sirhind near here on Monday night.
The Punjab Police guard, Somnath, pumped in 16 bullets into Sood, 45, killing him on the spot around 11.30pm. Police have arrested Somnath but are yet to disclose what drove him to commit the brutal murder.
Superintendent of police (city) Daljit Singh Rana said Somnath was being interrogated.
Police sources said Sood had three Punjab Police personnel as security guards but two of them were not in the house when the incident took place. They said Sood and Somnath had liquor together before the murder.
Sood’s body was sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem.
Besides the SP, district police chief Gurpreet Singh Gill and DSP Jagjit Singh Jalla rushed to the crime spot after being informed about the incident.
Sood shot into limelight when he attempted to kill Jagtar Singh Hawara, who was convicted for former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s assassination, in the Chandigarh court complex in 2011.
Sood along with Hindu Suraksha Samiti activists Nishant Sharma, Ramesh Dutt and Ashutosh Sharma had assaulted Hawara in the district court complex of Chandigarh’s Sector 17 on November 12, 2011. The four were booked on charges of obstructing a public servant from conducting his duty, wrongful restraint and voluntarily causing hurt. The incident occurred in broad daylight when Hawara and his accomplice Paramjit Singh Bheora were brought to Chandigarh for hearing in the Burail jailbreak case.
